Guy is nuts...Buddy here at work climbed the mountain right beside the one is this video. half done or el capitain or whatever...anyways...he was telling em how they slept in these hanging baskets at night time on this cliff face. Crazy sport. He also told me how you just see random balls of shit flying down the mountain from the climbers above taking dumps...awesome...

Yeah, some mountain climbing excursions take multiple days to climb so mountain climbers need to carry those baskets behind them as a bed for when they take a rest at night. The crazy thing about Alex Honnold is that he does that without any gear, he just carries it on a rope around his waist.

Finally watched this: Amazing.

I'm blown away by his athleticism, natural stretch, and agility. When people talk about elite athletes, they think of tennis players, hockey players, basketball players, etc. But solo free-climbing has to be the toughest sport in the world. I can't even think of another sport that trumps it.

Agreed, I've been obsessed with this guys story since I saw this documentary, he really is something else. As far as I'm concerned, the greatest athlete in the world today, certainly the most dominant in his respective sport.

You guys are confusing athletic dominance/ability with the fact that there are surely many people who are physically "able" to do what he does but psychologically and mentally "unable" to do it.

Errr... I don't think you have a fucking clue of how physically demanding it is to hold your own weight with a tiny sliver of leverage.

As usual, you are speaking about a topic out of turn. Alex Honnold has scaled mountains such as the North Face in hours (without rope) whereas even the most elite climbers can only scale it in a day (with rope). Alex Honnold has also scaled mountains that no one else has (free soloist or with rope), clearly he is the best at his sport, both athletically and mentally.

Shiv has a bad habit of commenting on things outside of his knowledge base.

LOL... most people aren't stupid enough to free climb, go to any local climbing location and you'll see some amazing things, friend of mine (ben coyle) can scale 90+ degree climbs w/o his legs -> including body throws -> and no i'm not talking about indoor walls -> purely recreational and amateur... in wicked shape, always been oddly strong.

Great amazing and super impressive. Best athlete in the world? ppfftttt why even try to give that title? What's the competition level? Have other elite global climbers bothered going to this location? No I'm not educated in climbing - but i've done it recreationally around 10 times and although very exhausting it's not what i'd define as athletic.

Kareem you're also making it sound like he free-climbs w/o 2+ rope climbs to scope a path... and i think around this time last year you were calling those guys that run and jump off things the best athletes, and before that the short basketball prospect with insane vert.

IMO the best athletes in the world are the guys at the top of their respective sports that have an insane population feeding the system, proper development paths and wicked organized comparisons: so Soccer, Hockey, Golf, Football, Boxing, Basket Ball etc (no order, and incomplete). But any comparison between sports is silly.

No Nick, the video I posted (emphasis on 'I') clearly demonstrates that Alex scopes out a path before he climbs it. I state facts, I leave the rest to you and Shiv. In the meantime, perhaps you could link us all to the direct quote where I stated a short basketball player was the best athlete in the world?

With regards to free running and gymnastics, up until this feat I believed they were the best athletes in the world, and now this has usurped that, and another feat will probably top that in the future. It's called evolution, athletics and athletes aren't static.
