Trade Deadline 2012: A Review

Post by Sensfanjosh »

With the BBKL Trade Deadline having passed a review is in order to see who the big winners and losers are following Deadline Day. Opening up the Deadline were the Capitals and Flames, making a red-eye deal at 1:40 AM which sent Mark Letestu as well as two second rounders to the nations capital in exchange for promising albeit injured prospect Joey Hishon. Washington would also go on to add veteran winger Peter Sykora from Winnipeg in exchange for futures, bolstering its Eastern Conference leading roster.

The biggest deals of the day however would come later, with Boston opting to exchange an under-preforming Brad Richards in a deal for Mike Fisher. The deal would serve to address the needs of both the Bruins and the Islanders, with New York being starved for offense while peripherally sound, and Boston requiring healthy bodies to plug into the center of its lineup. Boston wasn't finished though, and would finish a deal with Detroit to land Sergei Gonchar to supplement a banged up, and somewhat underwhelming blue line. In exchange the Red Wings would receive Thomas Kopecky, a very nice peripheral forward who could serve as a building block for the rebuilding Wings going forward as well as veteran defensive anchor Andy Sutton.

Perhaps the biggest, and most interesting deal of the day would be consummated in the waning hours though, between the rebuilding Stars and the playoff bound Predators. On the brink of the Deadline, and initiated by the poorly timed injury to all-star goaltender Niklas Backstrom Nashville would shop out youngster Tyler Ennis with the injured tender to the lone star state in exchange for the goal-tending tandem of Illya Bryzgalov and Sergeri Bobrovsky. The long-term consequences of this deal could certainly alter the futures of either franchise. Nashville affirms their playoff hopes by adding a healthy, but under-preforming tandem. Going forward Nashville becomes stronger by adding a talented, and young tandem which plays for one of the better teams in the NHL which should earn them some wins even if they continue to leave much to be desired on the stat sheet. This is not to say Dallas loses the deal, and in fact its quite easy to argue the opposite. Peter adds a top 5 goalie to his roster, and only needs to worry about adding a steady backup in the off-season to solidify his goal-tending situation. It is the addition of Ennis to an already young, and highly touted forward corp that is the real accomplishment. Going forward with Ennis, Cody Hodgson, Sean Couturier, as well as prospects Ryan Strome, Beau Bennett, Tomas Jurco and surprising AHL scorer Cory Conacher the future is indeed bright in Dallas.

I like I like. Very few trades surprisingly. Everyone got their line-up ready to go before today -- which makes sense. Worst luck has to be Steve's though -- was out all day and on his way home, JvR broke his foot. Whoops!
