I wish that I could blame just one side.... but in many regards I can empathize with the players (ideologically at least), and with the owners losing money (that's not good business) -> now the idea of the fucking Leafs making MORE money pisses me off, but I have nothing wrong with the owners making some/good money, it is a business and that is why they compensate players so well.

I can't empathize with the owners in that respect, if they were serious about fixing the financial disparity in the league they would commit themselves to a more aggressive revenue sharing system that distributes money to the teams who need it, and/or a luxury tax system (without a floor) that incentivizes more revenue sharing, and allows the poorer teams to spend within their means. Unfortunately, the owners are more concerned with short term band-aids at the players expense, and preserving artificial parity at all costs. It's created a cycle of labour stoppages that threaten to ruin this sport moving forward. /end rant

As for the players, they are deluded if they believe they can avoid a roll back of any kind. It's not fair, but it's the owners mandate, and after 2004 it should be perfectly clear to everyone that the owners will forgo a cancelled season to win. The players need to understand that, and rather than try to come to a fair deal, come to a deal that they can live with. It happened with the NBA, and the NFL, and it will happen in the NHL, it's really just a matter of when...

I hate the owners and the players. Both are greedy fucks making millions.
Fans lose, fuck the NHL I wish I was paid hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars to play a game. That'd be great.

Fact: The Majority of pro NHL'ers have to work following their careers to make a living. The notion that all players are rich and greedy is false. Similarly, the majority of owners in the NHL didn't make their riches from the NHL, in fact many of them are losing money because of it.

I'm well aware of that.

Just venting then? Fair enough.

Why don't all the players just make the same money?
If you think I'm serious. please calm down and realize i'm simply pointing out the fucking stupidity of (extreme) profit sharing. Just because there are only 30 of them, doesn't mean the concept isn't the same. We're not commies, we work together but as a collection of individuals. If you carry your load and contribute you'll succeed, if you have a bad year or bad luck, others will help out and the system will protect you, but if you cannot help yourself..

No, not so much. The players should still be happy with the extremely generous salaries they make for playing a game. They have to work after they are done? Oh boo. Most people nowadays work into their 60s. It's a shame these guys can't retire at 35 and work-free for the rest of their lives.
Saying 'the majority' of pro NHLers have to work after their careers is false. Yes, there are players that do work after their careers are over, whether it's to make money to live, enjoyment, or to keep them busy from boredom. The NHL has a pretty solid pension plan, so maybe they cannot retire and live a rich lifestyle they may have come accustomed too, but most can retire and live off their pension and interest on the money they've earned.
Even a player making NHL minimum absolutely destroys in life. I think you underestimate just how much a $500,000 salary is. If you even have the slightest knowledge in investments, that salary + the NHL pension can set these guys up for life as long as they don't blow it like many NBA and NFLers do. Buying $3,000,000 houses and $200,000 cars is a quick way to blow through money no matter what your salary is.
Most owners have so much money that owning and operating an NHL team is a toy for them. Some owners make money off hockey, most don't. They have made or make their money in other business ventures and get to play with their toy when they feel like it. Some toys cost millions a year in money down the drain, that's a shame.

I recently re-visited the top 10 worst salary blowout spending spree amongst professional athletes - article from SNet magazine several issues ago. Great stuff.

Agree. Tired of listening and looking at all the clowns involved. They are all greedy bastards and i could give two shits about the politics and ethics of business and employees so don't anyone lecture me please with a long winded explanation like above. They all suck. Fuck them. I have lost a lot of respect for both sides. Using the fans and public media as bartering tools to squeeze the other side. Fuck you you greedy fucks. I hope the league is cancelled for 2 years and maybe even more.
