Shep wroteCOLONI want to use a formula to extract the cap hit of Player X from Capgeek.com. But I don't want to have to type in the formula manually with the PlayerID from the site for each cell.

Is this possible?
I would think you'd need access to their database, be it their SQL or a CSV download. That or use some tool that can strip the info out of HTML.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something?
I'd need the CSV file but I don't believe they offer it to the public
Interested in your approach Scott

ie-

In Cell B it takes the name from Cell A (Jakub Voracek) and searches capgeek.com, nhlnumbers or whatever and extracts the cap hit and inputs it.

I think you'd need a (perl perhaps) script outside of Excel to do that

Yeah, I've been working on manually inputing that data into a spreadsheet because Capgeek doesn't have an Excel file of all their data for each player. I stopped working on the spreadsheet for a few months during the lockout...I'm quite a ways into inputing all the salaries and basic player data (birthdates, GP, shot/glove, height and weight). I'll probably pick that back up now that the league is back to business.

I have been working on and off on a pretty awesome Excel based doc that sorts/comapres all players and ranks them based on all of their stats weighted anyway you want. Almost complete, a few of the guys here have seen it at some points of its progression.

Bump.

An easy way to get all NHL Cap Hits have: Cell A1 Player's name, Cell A2 automatically inputs A1's salary by searching the database for said players name.

That's what I need to do. I have the time, I just need to know HOW.

I guess that means "it's impossibly hard" since you are an excel superstar yourself.

Even if I went the "long route" and got every NHLers player page from CapGeek and it could grab the current caphit from there, I'd do it.

Again, I just don't know how and cannot find it online.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me could do it pretty easily.

There's probably a step that's required outside of Excel first.

We have a list of every BBKL-owned player's cap hit from CBS, but there are errors in there.

hackey ass way to do all the number:

create excel doc with 3 fields: ID, Name, ID (add bday if you want, would help for a bbkl master list).

populate column 1 with numbers 1-> 1000 or whatever

instruct macro to copy ID field, paste in url, wait 1 second, copy name, paste name, copy cap hit, paste cap hit.

copy the next value from the ID field and repeat.

---------------------------
You can instruct it to do this with keyboard and mouse movements.

It would probably take an hour or so to run the script.

My master list isn't for BBKL lol. Just for another pool where I manually track our teams player and salary caps.

Might try that.
