Having reached the half way marker, it is time to recap some of the studs and scrubs thus far in the 2012-2013 BBKL season.

Sitting atop the score board is center Steven Stamkos, with a whopping 29 points (13 goals and 16 assists) through five weeks and 18 games played. Perhaps riding on his coat-tails is Stamkos’ linemate impressive rookie Cory Conacher who has put together a strong outing in his own right to the tune of 17 points.

While Stamkos is a familiar sight atop the scoring race, talented youngster Jakub Voracek is still trying to make a name for himself, landing in a three-way tie for 10th overall in scoring. Voracek has been one of the league’s hottest players, scoring 12 points (4 goals and 8 assists) over his last five games played.

On the other end of the spectrum are struggling scorers Drew Stafford (on pace for 2 goals through the shortened season) and Ryane Clowe (who has yet to score in 16 games played). Though perhaps the coaching shakeup in Buffalo can snap Stafford back to his usual pace, Clowe is facing a suspension for an incident with Andrew Shaw of the Blackhawks that threatens to continue his cold streak.

In the peripheral categories pests Steve Ott, and Matt Martin lead the NHL in hits with 82, and 78 respectively. Maple Leaf newcomer Leo Komarov falls into third place with 75, and San Jose center Tommy Wingels is starting to make a name for himself with 51 as well.
Among defensemen Niklas Kronwall is continuing the strong play of last season where he tallied 36 points (15 goals) by leading all defensemen in points with 16. Two of the league’s highest-scoring defensemen in Tobias Enstrom, and Erik Karlsson have unfortunately able to participate in 13 and 14 games respectively, the Flyers and Kings no doubt miss their presence in weekly head-to-head play.

Veteran Filip Kuba has struggled in Florida this season despite earning a 4million contract for his play last season alongside the aforementioned Karlsson. His -10 rating and recent injury have no doubt drawn the ire of Leafs GM Mike. Kuba is not alone in his struggles though, with Tyler Myers experiencing a prolonged slump in the strong defensive play that earned him a Calder. Myers has even been benched this season, however Habs GM Chuck is hoping that the recent firing of Lindy Ruff will serve to rejuvenate the lackluster play of the youngster.

That’s all for now look for future Studs and Scrubs at the BBKL trade deadline, and following the regular season.
